The St. Paul's Discernment Committee and Vestry unanimously called
the Reverend Margaret Dudley Ashby as our Rector and the Diocese
blessed and approval with a Letter of Agreement signed by all parties
on October 23, 2015, calling the her as our Rector. Her call
became effective and her first service at St. Paul’s was on Sunday,
November 8, 2015.
Rev. Margaret, and her husband Gerald, live in Asheville. They moved to Asheville several years ago to be close to family and grandchildren. Daughter Tracy, and her husband Nick, have two children ages 11 and 9. The Ashby’s son, James, lives west of Denver with his wife, Anya, and their infant daughters. Rev. Margaret was born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts. She received her Associates Degree in Textile & Surface Design in 1992 from The Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY) in New York City and worked professionally as a Textile Designer for Glenoit Mills in NYC until 1994. Hearing the call of the Lord, she entered Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio completing her Master of Divinity Degree in 2006. She became an Ordained Minister on July 22, 2006 and was called to the Pleasant View Evangelical Lutheran Church, Staunton, Virginia where she served as Pastor until 2009. Since moving to Asheville, Rev. Margaret completed Interim Ministry training and has done frequent supply clergy assignments. She volunteers with the Buncombe County Literacy Council preparing Spanish speaking students to become naturalized U.S. citizens.
The Lutheran and Episcopal churches have been in full communion since 2000 and Reverend Margaret has seamlessly moved into the WNC Episcopal Diocese as would an Episcopal Priest from another Diocese. As required of all clergy in the WNC Episcopal Diocese, Rev. Margaret is mentored and instructed concerning the Book of Common Prayer, Diocesan governance and disciplinary rules and a participant in the Episcopal Fresh Start program. While serving in an Episcopal parish, Rev. Margaret functions the Rector In Charge exactly like an Episcopal priest, including attending and voting at Annual Conventions.
We did not know what “God’s Dream” was for St. Paul’s as we traveled down the unknown road of Discernment. But, now we know that His dream was to deliver us The Reverend Margaret Ashby who by the Grace of God, is leading us spiritually into the next chapter of our church's long history.
