Saint Matthias the Apostle

In the aftermath of the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot, the eleven remaining Apostles followed the suggestion of Saint Peter that "one of those who accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning with the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us -- one of these men must become a witness with us to his resurrection" (Acts 1:21-22).  The method selected for choosing a new Apostle was drawing by lots rather than by a democratic process, reflecting their belief that the choice should and would be made by God rather than by themselves.  Two men were nominated, Joseph Justus who was known by the nickname Barsabbas, and Matthias.  The lot fell to Matthias and he was then enrolled as one of the twelve Apostles.

Nothing further is known about Matthias -- he is not even mentioned anywhere else in the Bible.  According to ancient traditions, he preached the Gospel in Ethiopia.  In their writings, Eusebius and Saint Epiphanius each mention Matthias as having been one of the Seventy Disciples before being selected to be an Apostle.

Commentators have pointed out that, because so little is known about him, Saint Matthias offers us a good example of one whose unheralded companionship with Jesus is not unlike that of many Christians through the years, people whose names are unknown to most of us but who served God faithfully in their own generations.

Collect for the Feast of St. Matthias (February 24)

Almighty God, who in the place of Judas chose your faithful servant Matthias to be numbered among the Twelve: Grant that your Church, being delivered from false apostles, may always be guided and governed by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
