Blessed Jeremy Taylor, Bishop In the 17th
century, Jeremy Taylor was one of the most influential, although at times,
controversial, leaders in the Church of England. While still quite young, he was
chosen to be chaplain to King Charles the First, and, during the civil war, was
a chaplain to the royalist forces. Their defeat brought about Taylor’s

After the restoration of the monarchy, he became Bishop of Down and Connor, later adding responsibility for the adjacent diocese of Dromore. He played a leading role in reviving the intellectual life of the Church of Ireland and was widely respected as a man of prayer and a true pastor to his people. Taylor’s literary genius was also reflected in his composition of many prayers, one of which, often used at the burial of the dead (see the Book of Common Prayer p. 504) forms the basis for the Collect used on Taylor’s Feast Day of August 13th.
A Collect for the Feast of Blessed Jeremy Taylor
O God, whose days are without end, and whose mercies cannot be numbered: Make us, like your servant Jeremy Taylor, deeply aware of the shortness and uncertainty of human life; and let your Holy Spirit lead us in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
